Imperial Palace In Kyoto Retrofit Against Major Earthquakes

KYOTO, JAPAN – MAR. 16: One of Japan's Imperial palaces has completed retrofitting works against possible major earthquakes, Imperial Household Agency said Monday March 16. The Kyoto Omiya Palace in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, Japan's former capital where the imperial family lived until 1860s, was previously refurbished in mid 19th century under Emperor Komei. In 2013 it was judged vulnerable against earthquakes stronger than Japanese scale of 6 and the government temporarily stopped using the Emperor's lodging house and reinforced by installing 40-centimeter thick concrete basement and steel frames in walls with the budget of 100 million yen, 830 thousand U.S. dollars.
