A male hoverfly (Eristalis tenax), or drone fly, hovering above plum blossom on a sunny day, waiting for passing females. It chases any flying insect that passes in order to check its identity and then returns to more or less the same point to continue hovering. While hovering, the wings of this species beat at around 420 Hz. Filmed at 800 frames per second (slowed down 32 times)
