I was given 20 to 1 on him in New York EM: Well you know, no one in America ever recovers from this virus / once they want to become President it recurs / I think it is still there with Mr Stevenson RD: And Senator Symington - someone people don't know very well over here? EM: Well he comes from the right party of the country - Missouri in the middle of the country. However he's been in the Senate a long time and traditionally a Senator has difficulty becoming elected because he has created a vaulting record / he has stood for something and against other things / this is something of a handicap in our system / governors are more likely to get the nomination RD: Would you say the same applies to Lyndon Johnson? EM: Yes, he suffered from the additional handicap of coming from the South / there is always Governor Robert B. Meyner of New Jersey - has a sort of neutral in the areas / much to early I think RD: And governor Mennen Williams - 5 time governor of Michigan, how about him? EM: Perhaps - the lightening could strike anyone RD: And what about governor (Averell) Harriman? EM: No - too old I think
