Manhattan Beach Shoreline Property Seized From Black Family In The 20's To Be Returned To Family's Heirs
MANHATTAN BEACH, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 28: (INTERVIEW) Chief Duane "Yellow Feather" Shepard of the Pocasset Wampanoag Tribe, cousin of the direct descendent of Charles and Willa Bruce, speaks on how previously unknown relatives of the family have stepped forward among the attention Bruce's Beach has been getting on April 28, 2021 in Manhattan Beach, California. The beachfront property was once a seaside resort owned by Charles and Willa Bruce, a Black couple, which was open to all people, including African Americans. Amid the Jim Crow era, the city claimed the property in 1924 through eminent domain while vastly underpaying the couple for the land. A State Senate bill is in the process of being passed that would allow for the return of the prime beachfront property, which may be worth $75 million, to Bruce family descendants.
