Sir Mark Rylance (Actor and Intermission Youth Theatre Trustee) interview SOT
- We must keep imagination and theatre and play free - there are a lot of political issues at the moment about correctness but it must be possible for people different things than who they really are and experience those things
Q: On characters of a certain background being played by actors of same background
- Theatre crying out for diversity - in my whole career I've worked with one black stage manager - there is a real issue that there hasn't been enough diversity in casting - at the moment one way they're getting a demand on being part of it is stopping white men playing black people - obviously - and increasingly, playing Jewish people, Arabian people - cross gender - I hope that's a stage we'll move past once we've got to something more fair and equitable

- (Slurring words) I didn't really form my words very well so I was sent to a speech therapist which helped me - I noticed my parents were very embarrassed and frightened for me - I think it was play acting - first with friends, copying television programmes like Star Trek - so you could improvise for hours and hours and you were Captain Kirk - if you pretended you were Captain Kirk you could speak
