The pink represents NEWLY FORMED BONE, and the purple is CALCIFIED CARTILAGE--originally hyaline cartilage that is gradually destroyed and replaced with bone. The bone shows many BONE CELLS (OSTEOCYTES) and some LACUNAE--the spaces in the matrix that contain the osteocytes. There is a single layer of OSTEOBLASTS (BONE-FORMING CELLS) on upper surface of the bone.
