SKIN, EPIDERMIS--LAYERS and MELANOCYTES in the BASAL LAYER, Keratinized thick skin, 100X. The epidermis shows four layers: STRATUM CORNEUM (keratinized or cornified layer), and also, shows a sweat gland duct (pink), STRATUM GRANULOSUM (dark layer with dark granules), STRATUM SPINOSUM (many layers of cells), and STRATUM BASALE (Basal Layer or Stratum Germinitivum, has a high rate of mitosis). The Basal Layer is dark and has dark cells called MELANOCYTES which produce a dark, protective pigment MELANIN. The pink area under the basal layer is the Dermis. The epidermis is stratified squamous epithelium. "n"n
