Farmer Hubert Bernhard Produces Green Electricity On His Apple Orchard
KRESSBRONN, GERMANY - JULY 11: In an aerial view, apples grow on the apple orchard under the solar panels of a photovoltaic system on July 11, 2023 in Kressbronn near Lindau am Bodensee, Germany. The 60-year-old fruit farmer Hubert Bernhard replaced the hail nets on around 0.4 hectares of his orchards with a photovoltaic system with a nominal output of around 230,000 kWh per year. Bernhard produces an average of 630 kWh of electricity per day via his solar panels, depending on the length of sunshine. In addition to generating green electricity, solar panels bring other benefits to fruit growing. The plants are protected from hail and too much rain and as a result, require less pesticides and were, therefore, able to bring in a 100 per cent harvest last year.
