Villagers display red lanterns in front...

Xian, CHINA: Villagers display red lanterns in front of their homes in Sanzhao Village, where the festive decorations have been made since the Tang Dynasty (618-907), 07 February 2007, on the outskirts of Xian, in northwest China's Shaanxi province. Red lanterns, believed to date back to the Western Han Dyansty (206BC-24AD) and traditionally recognized as a symbol of good luck, were once powered by a candle and made of a bamboo frame and red paper, but nowadays villagers craft their lanterns with wire mesh, red nylon and a light bulb. Chinese traditionally hang up red lanterns during the Lantern Festival, also known as the Full Moon Festival, that is celebrated on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year which this year falls on February 18.
