Arctic Icebergs in Ilulissat Ice fjord in Greenland. 250 km inside the Arctic Circle in Disko Bay
Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland. It is 250 km north of the polar circle in Disko Bay at the mouth of the 45 km long ice fjord which is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. ( July 2004 ) Ilulissat means 'icebergs', the area is dominated by huge icebergs, some of which tower 100 metres above the surface. They move along the fjord on their way to the sea. The icebergs here originate from the fastest producing glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, which spits out no less than 20 million tons of ice a day. This corresponds to 35 cubic kilometres on an annual basis - a tenth of the total production of icebergs from Greenlands inland ice. (Photo by Jeff Overs/BBC News & Current Affairs via Getty Images)
