- Despite the forebodings of businessmen as mandatory sanctions come closer, most ordinary white Rhodesians seem little concerned at the plans being hatched on the other side of the world to bring them to their knees. For the 1st few days after the Tiger talks the situation here seemed fluid while chances of a settlement was still a possibility. But now Rhodesia front party officials have questioned Mr Smith and gone away apparently satisfied to stiffen the resolve of their members all over the country. The Larger mentality grows, whites who can't or won't change their attitude to African advacement are trekking South from Zambia to Rhodesia where they hope to make a stand. And if it's impossible here, there's always South Africa where 2,000 white Rhodesians went during the past year. There's still plenty of money left in Salisbury, the Christmas trade here is as brisk as it is in Oxford Street, so far it's Africans who are feeling the pinch. With higher sales tax, dearer meat and fewer jobs many of them are being driven back to the subsistence economy of the reserves. As long as Portugal and South Africa continue to bale Rhodesia out economically, no single sanction will ever make Mr Smith abandon independence. But what some Rhodesians recognise is that relying so totally on other's help, that independence may in any case be lost:
