Event Date(s): 05/18/2009 | Event Location(s): Today New York Studio | Description: KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Hi, everybody. It's Monday, it's May 18th. We're so happy that you're here with us after what we hope was a great weekend. HODA KOTB: Yes, it was. HODA KOTB: I--we seem to be going from directly--at least in New York, from winter to summer. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Well... KOTB: There's no spring. We're missing the whole in between. GIFFORD: This feels more like fall. KOTB: Right? GIFFORD: Yeah. It's been--it was a pretty dismal weekend. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: But you went away. It wasn't just the president and Mrs. Obama that were--that were giving great speeches to our graduating classes. Miss Hoda went down to West Virginia. KOTB: Yes, I did. You know, my dad was a professor at WVU, West Virginia University, and I went back there. Oh, that is a... 10:00:48 (:33) STILL: Photo of Kotbe delivering commencement address at WVU. INT WEST VIRGINIA MS: Kotbe walks to podium at WVU for commencement address and she delivers commencement address. GIFFORD: Whoo! KOTB: That is not a good look. That is not a good look. GIFFORD: I'd follow you anywhere. KOTB: Follow me! GIFFORD: That's a Jim Jones look. KOTB: That--this was the graduates for the communications department. They were a great bunch of kids. GIFFORD: Oh, so they do it differently, just a particular department. KOTB: They chunk it out. GIFFORD: Ah. KOTB: Yeah, they do chunk it out. And it was a lot of fun. And I played a little song for the grads. They were adorable. GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: Their song for, in West Virginia, as you might guess, is"Country Roads Take Me Home." GIFFORD: (Singing) Taking me home. Yeah. KOTB: So I put them on to the--to the iPod and jacked it up. Oh, I wondered where these were. Anyway, it was... GIFFORD: And did they all sing along to the whole... KOTB: They all sang, hands in the air. It was really fun. And, you know, what's weird is I lived there till I was 12. So I don't know if you've ever gone back to a--to a town you have not been back to since you were a kid. Everything, I know it's cliche, everything is so much smaller, the streets. I remember it being remarkable, huge. GIFFORD: Oh, you're kidding. KOTB: Trees and it--it's just... GIFFORD: It just seems little now. KOTB: Yeah, it seems little. But it was great to go back. GIFFORD: But a lot of the same people were there and they said hello to you, right? You could... KOTB: I saw some old neighbors, Mrs. Renton and Mrs. Renton from my old neighborhood showed up for the graduation and they were like--they called me Howdy. `We can't believe it's you.' GIFFORD: Oh, Howdy. Oh. KOTB: I said, oh, my. It was just fun going back. How was your weekend, Ms. Gifford? GIFFORD: My weekend was quiet. KOTB: Yeah? GIFFORD: I catched up on--I caught up. I catched up--I catched up on some old stuff that I just hadn't gotten to in a while. KOTB: It's what--no--I done--I done catched up. GIFFORD: I done catched up. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: I was thinking of Leo DiCaprio and I was thinking of"Catch Me If You Can." KOTB: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. GIFFORD: That's why I was--I didn't actually see that movie, but we wanted to. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: No, I went to see"Angels& Demons." KOTB: And what did we think? GIFFORD: You know what, I hadn't read good reviews on it. KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: But I love Ron Howard. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: And I love Tom Hanks and they don't make bad movies, let's... KOTB: No. GIFFORD: So I just thought I want to go see it. I--the subject matter is fascinating. So we loved it. We all went. It's--Cody's home from college now, so we--I liked it actually better than"The DaVinci Code." KOTB: It's the number one movie of the week--of the weekend. GIFFORD: It did. It did, yeah. KOTB: It did very well. GIFFORD: Regardless of what the critics thought. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: The next day we saw one that I hadn't--that you had seen that I wasn't able to go to the screening. KOTB: Loved it. GIFFORD: That was the one called"State of Play." KOTB:"State of Play." That's a great movie, yeah. GIFFORD: With Russell Crow and Rachel McAdams? KOTB: McAdams. Yeah. GIFFORD: And Ben Affleck. Liked that, too. KOTB: And if you weren't at the movies, maybe you're watching"Saturday Night Live." And guess who got spoofed? You. GIFFORD: I know. That's what I hear. KOTB: It happened--you didn't see it? I didn't see it, either. GIFFORD: No, I hear it from my son's friends. KOTB: That's must be fun. GIFFORD: Frank and I start to drool at 9:00. We don't stay up to watch anything. We see it on Monday morning here. KOTB: Well, apparently you were a guest, or your character was a guest on"Jeopardy." GIFFORD: On"Celebrity Jeopardy." KOTB: All right, let's just listen. 10:03:15 (:32) Clip from"Saturday Night Live" with Saturday Night Live's Kristen Wiig portraying Kathie Lee and with actor Tom Hanks. KOTB: Is that a zip lock? GIFFORD: Oh, I love it. KOTB: I like that. GIFFORD: I heard Tom was hysterical, and I heard that Norm McDonald-was it McDonald? KOTB: Yeah. Offscreen Voice: Yes. GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: Norm McDonald, yes. GIFFORD: He was apparently hysterical as well. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: So I'd love to see--if they want to send over a tape to us of the whole thing, I'd love to watch. KOTB: Right. Do we have another clip or just the one clip? GIFFORD: Oh, there's another one, I think... KOTB: Is there another one? GIFFORD: ...they ask me to write... KOTB: Let's see the other one. GIFFORD: Hm. KOTB: Might as well see. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: You're a riot. GIFFORD: Yeah, I'm... 10:04:07 (:28) Clip from"Saturday Night Live" with Wiig as Kathie Lee. KOTB: That's rude! Did you win? GIFFORD: That I'll be passed out in an hour. KOTB: OK. GIFFORD: I'm so glad we catched up with that. KOTB: Yeah, I'm so glad we did, too. That was the season finale, by the way. GIFFORD: Season finale. KOTB: That was it for"SNL." GIFFORD: But you know what... KOTB: What? GIFFORD: ...I can hardly wait till the fall. KOTB: Yeah, I bet. GIFFORD: You know what, all they had to do was call me. I live close by, I was not doing anything. KOTB: You could've been on it. GIFFORD: Yes. If Tom Hanks can play himself... KOTB: You can play yourself. GIFFORD: ...I'm certainly able to. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: But they're afraid of me. KOTB: They're terrified. GIFFORD: They're terrified of me. KOTB: Who isn't, is what I say. GIFFORD: Who isn't? Rightfully so. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: Barack Obama gave a graduation speech, we talked a little bit about it. GIFFORD: Yes. I saw it on the news. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: I didn't actually see the whole thing. KOTB: It was at Notre Dame and it was very controversial because of his views on abortion. 10:05:07 (:35) INT INDIANA MS: President Barack Obama delivers commencement address at Note Dame University. MS: Police escort a protestor from commencement. GIFFORD: Right. KOTB: But I have to say, at the end of the day it seemed as if he found some common ground. I mean, he talked about how there should be fewer abortions over all, which got a big applause... GIFFORD: Of course. KOTB: ...from Notre Dame. He seems to always strike the right tone in sticky situations. GIFFORD: He tries to, which is the whole key. He says why can't we agree to disagree in a respectful way. KOTB: Right. And there were protesters and things around. GIFFORD: Well, sure. KOTB: But I... GIFFORD: I think it's fascinating that one of the protesters that was actually arrested... KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: ...was the woman who was the original Roe in Roe vs. Wade, who is now, I guess... KOTB: Yes. Pro-life. GIFFORD: ...a pretty passionate pro-life advocate. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: But you're going to get that because we live in a great country, Hoda woman. KOTB: Yeah, we sure do. And I thought they give him a big round of applause in the stadium. GIFFORD: Well, he carried Indiana. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: And he--I guess most of the kids at Notre Dame had voted for him as well. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: So... KOTB: And colleges are that--you should have people with opposing views come, that's what colleges are all about. You get to hear points of view. GIFFORD: It's called discussion. KOTB: That's what it is called. OK, this is worth discussing. This is disgusting. I'm sorry, but we have to. GIFFORD: We want to start off your week... KOTB: OK, here's a pool survey. It was conducted by the Water Quality and Health Council. It surveyed 1,000 adults and they asked them the question, who has urinated in a pool, OK? GIFFORD: And this is for adults, not children. KOTB: At least 17 percent admitted to urinating in a pool. GIFFORD: And the rest are lying. KOTB: Seventy-eight percent suspect that their fellow swimmers are urinating in the pool. GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: And 47 percent admitted to one or more behaviors that contribute to an unhealthy pool, which things like not showering before you jump in the drink and things like that. GIFFORD: But I love what the CDC says to do. KOTB: What did the CDC recommend? Hold on, hold on. GIFFORD: They recommend--sorry, everybody. KOTB: Where is it? GIFFORD: They recommend that you do not go in a pool if you are suffering from diarrhea. KOTB: It's written. They've written that down. It is ridiculous. GIFFORD: Because that's the first thing I really want to do when I'm, you know, got the grumbling in the stomach, you're not feeling well. You know, a nice, soothing swim in a nice, clean pool. Darn, am I crazy, or is just me? KOTB: Oh, my God. OK, we talked about this Friday, but our AMBUSH MAKEOVER team is hitting the road and it might be come... GIFFORD: People are excited. KOTB: Yes, they might come to your town. So you've got to write in and... GIFFORD: Look, they look so cute. KOTB: Look at Louis and Jill. Klgandhoda.com, write in and tell us, give us your picture and tell us why we should come to you. That's going to be starting June the 8th. GIFFORD: And we have another little announcement coming up, too, but it concerns our little Curtis Stone. KOTB: Oh, yes. GIFFORD: Which is very exciting. KOTB: Yes, we kept talking about winning a date with Curtis. GIFFORD: I think it's tomorrow. Isn't it, Tam? KOTB: He's going to--they're going to announce it? GIFFORD: Curtis? TAMMY: Call the winner live tomorrow. KOTB: He's going to call the winner live tomorrow. GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: It's thrilling. GIFFORD: And it was--you know what, they were going to do it this Friday, he didn't want to ruin everybody's weekend plans for the, you know, the Memorial Day weekend. He would've made their plans. KOTB: He would've made their plans is right. GIFFORD: Let's reconsider. KOTB: Absolutely. GIFFORD: You know, Maybe it's his plans, he wants to go off someplace. KOTB: Oh, wait, there's Lisa Rinna (seen in studio with her husband Harry Hamlin), by the way. We have her book. GIFFORD: Well, Lisa is the talk of this... KOTB: Hi. Oh. GIFFORD: And there she is... KOTB: Yes. And here's her book full of you won't believe. GIFFORD: OK. Look at. KOTB: Look at all... GIFFORD: Rarely, rarely do our producers mark where we need to see and... KOTB: Lisa, it's racy. GIFFORD: Oh, dear. KOTB: Harry's embarrassed. GIFFORD: Harry should be. But Harry... Mr. HARRY HAMLIN: What? GIFFORD: ...you wrote the forward. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: And it's dedicated to their two little daughters. So there's going to be--there's going to be a big, big thing coming up. KOTB: Yes. And we've got other crews--their crews are in the studio, too, wandering around. GIFFORD: Yes. They're doing a reality series... KOTB: Mm-hmm. Yeah. We'll talk to her in a bit. GIFFORD: ...which they wanted to call, it was announced it was going to be called"I Love Lisa." KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: Which I think is an adorable little take, and apparently there might be a problem with that. So right now it's"I Love Lisa Rinna." KOTB: OK. GIFFORD: But just so we--so we're not confused. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: You know, it's a shame. Lawyers, they've got to... KOTB: They ruin everything. GIFFORD: ...put the kibosh on everybody's fun. KOTB: They do. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: It's--we should go over to Miss Sara. I think she's got--she's got... GIFFORD: How was your weekend, Miss Sara? SARA HAINES: It was great. It was great. GIFFORD: Oh, good. KOTB: What do you have in your hand there? HAINES: This is the iPhone. KOTB: Yes. HAINES: But I wanted to show you guys the TODAY show app. KOTB: OK. HAINES: Now, you need an iPhone or an iPod Touch. KOTB: OK. HAINES: But, and I'm going to show you how it looks on the screen. This is the app. You can get it for free at iTunes. It's the only news morning show that does this right now. KOTB: OK. HAINES: But it's kind of cool. For all of you people that write in and say you can't watch the show live, it shows the top stories in every different category we cover. Here's our Kathie Lee and Hoda. KOTB: OK. So you... HAINES: So you click in to that. And then you can watch the show. You can watch it, listen to it, you can watch all the video, the stories and so you kind of have it in the palm of your hand. GIFFORD: And this is a silly question, but forgive me; live, or once it's already been aired? HAINES: You can watch the show live from here. It... KOTB: But you can also watch bits and pieces. GIFFORD: Bits and pieces. HAINES: Yeah. KOTB: Yeah, whatever you like. The things that you enjoy. GIFFORD: That is terrific. HAINES: Yeah, it's really cool to watch. Video, photos, like, everything. KOTB: Everything. What are you giving away? You've got presents. GIFFORD: We're giving away iHomes today, aren't we? KOTB: Presents. HAINES: We are giving away--we're giving five iHomes to the Central Time Zone or anyone that watches it an hour later. KOTB: Oh, OK. GIFFORD: OK. HAINES: So... GIFFORD: What do they have to do, write in what? HAINES: Write in--let's--what do you want them to write in? Happy Monday. KOTB: Happy Monday. GIFFORD: OK, happy Monday. KOTB: OK, I've got to give you a gift. This is from--you guys got to look at this, this is the cutest thing. Hold on. Where should I go? Right here? Right here. GIFFORD: Mm-hmm. KOTB: This is so cute. These are cards that my friend Jane has made. It's called Plain Jane, that's her logo. But it's pjcarrot.com. You can order the cutest cards. Look at the one she made for you. Look at this one. Look at this one. Isn't that cute? GIFFORD: Why am I wearing a glass on my head? KOTB: Well, because she knows you. OK? GIFFORD: I don't know the woman. KOTB: Pjcarrot.com. You can order the cutest... GIFFORD: All right, that's... KOTB: You can--you can just sort of customize your cards. GIFFORD: And you send your own picture, they could... KOTB: I think she customizes. GIFFORD: Good. KOTB: You just got to go on the Web site, pjcarrot. GIFFORD: All right. KOTB: It's worth it. GIFFORD: All right, up next, the racy Lisa Rinna's here. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: And also with Harry. KOTB: Ooh, hot. GIFFORD: Got to love Harry. Ms. LISA RINNA: Got to love him.
