News of the World hacking scandal: Alastair Campbell interview; ENGLAND: London: Westminster: EXT Alastair Campbell (Former Downing Street Communications Director) interview SOT - Don't think there's any doubt when News International turned against Labour and Gordon Brown - Not surprised they went to the lengths they seemed to to discredit Brown - Will shock people they got into medical records and then published story about son having cystic fibrosis - People getting more sickened by it Q: re INVOLVEMENT OF OTHER PAPERS: - Thought it was good that Jeremy Hunt [Culture Secretary] said judicial inquiry will extend to other newspapers - They were not the only group to be involved in dubious + illegal activities in pursuit of stories - Without any doubt, other newspapers groups have been involved and should be called to account Q: re MURDOCH EMPIRE: - Had a sense of Empire being close to meltdown - Public revulsion has grown to such an extent it will be very difficult for govt to wave this through [BSkyB deal] Q: re TIMES + SUNDAY TIMES BEING LINKED: - Not surprised - This extends well beyond NOTW and Sun - Other groups will be part of judicial inquiry Q: re CAMPBELL'S OWN EXPERIENCE: - I've been shown papers from the Mulcair files which relate to me and my partner - Have also been shown invoices to many newspapers - My own newspaper Daily Mirror's paid large sums to a private investigator, not surprising it's broadening out to other newspaper groups
