Labour Party donations row continues: Harriet Harman interview; ENGLAND: London: INT Harriet Harman MP (Deputy Labour Party Leader and Leader of the House of Commons) interview SOT - (Asked if she should resign) No / The Harriet Harman for Deputy Campaign received a cheque from Janet Kidd which we believed was a donation to my campaign / Had no reason to believe it was from anyone else / Had no contact with David Abrahams / Had no idea who he was / Had clear rules for doantions to the campaign / First that we stick very closely to the letter and spirit of the law / Second that we would check all donations to make sure the donor was on the electoral register and therefore a permissable donor in law / Third that we would only receive donations from peole who were known personally to me or members of the campaign team or who were pre-existing Labour donors / We understood Janet Kidd to be a pre-existing Labour donor - So when we received the cheque in good faith we registered it publicly which is the procedure with the Electoral Commission / We received the cheque on the 4 July and sent her a personal hand-written thank you letter to thank her for her donation on the 9 July / Then I registered it with the Electoral Commission which is about making it public on the 17 July / It was further registered to the Register of Members' Interests in the House of Commons and to the Cabinet Office under the Ministerial Code - We had no reason to believe that it was anything other than a genuine donation to our campaign / When we discovered the problem on friday we notified the Electoral Commission and we've made arrangements today to return the cheque - (Asked again whether she should resign) No because I accepted the donation in good faith from someone who was a pre-existing donor to the Labour party / We checked her against the electoral register to make sure was a permissable donor and we also registered the donation with the Electoral Commission / We registered it as...
