- Absolute fundamental belief of mine that there is nothing progressive about losing control of the public finances, nothing fair about it / Successful parties of the centre right and of the centre left were all parties who undertook successful fiscal consolidation / Cut their budget deficits / I reject argument there is a choice between being fiscally responsible and being fair and progressive
- (Asked about budget measures being regressive) Reasonable when you are looking at a set of budget measures, when you take them together they are progressive across income distribution / If you look at measures like VAT on an expenditure distribution it is also progressive on that definition / Being fair is not just about income distribution / Also about offering equality of opportunity and our welfare and education reforms do that
- (Asked about toning down feeling of doom and austerity in most recent speech) What I was doing was highlighting some of the positive economic news we have had on unemployment and figures for growth / Saying we can be cautiously optimistic but agreeing with the Bank of England that it is going to be a choppy recovery / We have had biggest economic crisis of our lifetime and new government has inherited largest budget defict in the G20 / So we face those challenges / Reasonable to draw people's attention to positive news
