Baby Elephant Enjoys Muddy Hill Slide At Southwest China Rescue Center

Xishuangbanna, CHINA - JULY 06: An adorable baby elephant has become an internet sensation after footage of it enjoying a muddy hill slide at a rescue center in southwest China's Yunnan Province on July 6, 2021 in Xishuangbanna, China. Footage captured by staff at the Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Center in Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve showed the baby elephant, named Yi Shuang, going on all four and sliding down the slippery slope. Since elephants usually have a life expectancy of 60 to 70 years, the baby elephant, born on December 22, 2017, is still a toddler and ready for some fun adventure. "She is the fifth calf born to our breeding center. And she is over three years old. A few days ago, she and her mother passed a slope during the field survival training. Because the road is relatively wet and slippery after the rain, she bent down her hind legs and slid all the way down," said Zhou Fangyi, staff member of the Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Center. The other elephant Yang Niu came as a baby, after rescue by the Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Center in Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in 2015. She also became a web celebrity when she slid down the slope in 2017, when staff released the footage. Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan is one of the main habitats for wild Asian elephants in China. The animals are under Class-A protection in China and are classified as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
