RUSSIA : 1999, Russia. Aerial view of the Amur River, the border between China and Russia. Rising in the hills of Western Manchuria, the Amur is the last undammed river of the far eastern part of Russia and spreads out among the flood plains near the Strait of Tartary. In the 1800s, the fertile floodplains of the Amur, as well as the access they provided to the northern Pacific Ocean attracted Russian colonists who settled on the northern shores, despite the claims of the Chinese.
