Rape as a Weapon of War
GOMA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - DECEMBER 6: Niraneza Judith, 34, wife of Fabien Moyram, 45, greets two of her children as they return from school at home in Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, December 6, 2015. Niraneza was raped roughly eight years before, and her husband, Fabien, like many men in the eastern region of the DRC, rejected his wife for some time after the sexual assault. They were brought back together by an NGO, which offered a sort of group therapy and fostered dialogue amongst men whose wives were raped, and between couples. As the world takes more notice of rape being used as a weapon of war, Congo's dark history of sexual violence in conflict has much to teach the world on how to prevent rape, and how it can help survivors heal physically, emotionally, and socially. .(Photo by Lynsey Addario/Getty Images Reportage)
