(Compton, Ca – July 8, 2008) –– Former Compton Mayor Doris Davis, pauses to view the body of fellow former Compton Mayor Douglas Dollarhide as he lies in state inside Compton city council chambers a few days after dying at the age of 85. Davis succeeded Dollarhide in 1973. Both are considered political trailblazers. Dollarhide is thought to be the first African–American mayor of a major California city and Davis is considered to be the country's first African–American woman mayor.
