Nagorno-Karabakh (NKR) Defense Army Continues Training For Conflict Against Azerbaijan
AGDAM, FRONT LINE, AGDAM REGION, NAGORNO-KARABAKH - MAY 13: Two young soldiers from the 1st Bataillon, 8th regiment of the NKR Defense Army learn to assemble AK-74's in as little time as possible May 13, 2004 in Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed region that is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. The two soldiers are supervised by an officer who measures their efficiency with a stop-clock. Nagorno-Karabakh is a fertile, mountainous area of 4,400 square kilometers in the southern Caucasus situated inside what is internationally recognized as Azerbaijan. The name, a Russian-Turkish-Persian compound, shows the region's complex history and means "Mountainous Black Garden." The Karabakh Armenians call the region Artsakh or "Strong Forest." Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, which is largely Armenian populated. (Photo by Jonathan Alpeyrie/Getty Images)
