WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK, NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES - 2016/09/09: On the same day that the U.S. District Court in D.C. was scheduled to rule on a suit filed by the Standing Rock Reservation against the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the latter's approval of the Dakota Access Pipeline, activist gathered in Washington Square Park as a show of solidarity with Sioux tribal members staging a standoff with contractors working on the pipeline near Cannonball, North Dakota. Though the court ruling allowed for continuation of the pipeline's construction, the U.S. Justice and Interior Departments soon imposed a ban on construction under contested waterways.
