AfD Wins First District Office
SONNEBERG, GERMANY - JUNE 26: A local election campaign poster for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) reads: "The cards are being remixed . . . " on June 26, 2023 in Sonneberg, Germany. On June 24 AfD candidate Robert Sesselmann won in a run-off against Robert Koepper of the Christian Democrats (CDU) in the local district administrator election, making Sonneberg the first district office to fall into the hands of the AfD. Nationwide the AfD is on a rise, currently at second place in polls with 19% support, ahead of both the Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens but behind the CDU. The AfD is Germany's main right-wing party and has far-right elements. It typically rallies against immigration, renewable energies, NATO and the Euro and maintains ties with Russia.
