Jailed after the 1989 Tiananmen democracy protests, Bao, 70, died in Beijing on the evening of 28 October from illness, according to activist friends. During the mid-1980s, as a researcher at the prestigious China Academy of Social Sciences, Bao played an important role in an intellectual movement urging greater democracy in China, which culminated in the 1989 Tiananmen democracy protests that were crushed by the Chinese military, leaving hundreds if not thousands of people dead.
