KING EDWARD VIII: As Duke of Windsor (1894-1972) arriving at Victoria station in 1963. King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1936, he abdicated in order to marry an American divorcee, Mrs Wallis Simpson (1896-1986). He was created Duke of Windsor in 1937. * 5/6/01: Love letters from Edward VIII, when he was the Prince of Wales, to his sweetheart before Wallis Simpson were being auctioned. The collection of more than 260 love letters to Freda Dudley-Ward, daughter of a Nottingham lace maker, will go under the hammer at Bonhams & Brooks in London. In one letter, dated April 18, 1920, Edward, who would later abdicate to marry the American divorcee Mrs Simpson, told Freda 'Mon amour, I swear I'll never marry any other woman but you.'
