Policeman Driving a Catwalk Car

(Original Caption) An officer of the New York Port Authority is shown at the controls of the new two-way plastic enclosed catwalk car which made its first test run on a 2,2000 foot section of miniature railroad track installed on the 2 1/2 foot wide catwalk of the Holland Tunnel's New York bound tube. Use of such patrol cars would permit police to cover tunnel post faster and with greater convenience than they can do the job on foot. The car weighs 1,300 pounds, is two feet wide, 11 feet long and six feet high. It is equipped with a swivel seat and duplicate sets of push buttons which control the speed of the car in either direction at from 6 to 12 miles an hour. A 240 volt, three horsepower electric motor powers the car, which stops automatically when the speed control button is released, or when the car approaches the end of the track.
