South African supporters cheer near a mock trophy made by a local artist near the Hector Pieterson Museum in Soweto on June 16, 2010. South Africa paused from its World Cup celebrations today to observe the 34th anniversary of the Soweto uprising, a student protest whose tragic ending galvanised the anti-apartheid movement. On June 16, 1976, thousands of students from the black township of Soweto gathered to march in protest at being forced to go to school in Afrikaans, the language of the white-minority regime. Police opened fire on the unarmed protestors, killing hundreds -- including Hector Pieterson, the first to die in the violence.
