Gonorrhoea infection in male, computer illustration. Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the Gram-negative bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. In males, N. gonorrhoeae causes urethritis with the main symptoms being urethral discharge and a burning sensation on urination. Neisseria often hide inside neutrophils (incomplete phagocytosis) evading the immune response, leading to chronic recurrent infections.
