European Middle Ages. Bourgeois clothing in the 11th century. The image fragments come from the frescoes in the arch filling of the Abbey Church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe in Poitou, France. They depict scenes from the Old Testament and the martyrdom of Saints Savinus and Cyprianus. Created around 1100 in the style of the Roman catacomb paintings, they show the Franconian costumes and usual fashion of the time. The church is often referred to as the "Romanesque Sistine Chapel" and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
