Octagonal chimney - Stockfoto

An impressive remnant chimney stack from an abandoned copper smelter that operated in the early 20th century in a remote part of Cape York, Australia. The octagonal brick smelter chimney was erected in 1907 to improve smelter ventilation and disperse the harmful fumes at the OK Mine and Smelter site. The chimney stands intact with some vertical shearing of brickwork around the top, probably as a result of lightning strikes. The octagonal brick chimney dominating the smelter site is one of only three octagonal mining chimneys recorded in North Queensland, the others being at Chillagoe and Ravenswood. The OK copper smelter closed in 1910 and the site was abandoned shortly thereafter.
