This cell has an abundance of CHLOROPLASTS (green structures with the pigment CHLOROPHYLL), it also has a well-defined CELL WALL. Chlorophyll traps sunlight energy and manufactures carbohydrates like glucose from carbon dioxide and water in the complex metabolic process PHOTOSYNTHESIS. A nucleus is not evident in this thin section of a plant cell. These cells are from an aquatic plant called Elodea. Elodea is frequently used in Biology classes where students can learn how to make a simple wet mount of an Elodea leaf and observe it with a microscope.
