This two-view AP and lateral chest x-ray shows an elderly smoker who has a large left apical (upper lobe) tumor found to be lung cancer. The x-ray also shows a mouth with dental fillings, kyphotic curvature of the thoracic spine due to osteoporosis and multiple vertebral compression fractures (likely related to smoking) and destruction of the lungs (emphysema) from smoking. Lung cancer is so common in smokers that it saves the healthcare industry money to screen for lung cancer once a year with a low dose chest CT. This prevents lung cancer from becoming this advanced and can help catch small cancers before they metastasize, increasing the cure rate and decreasing cost of treatment.
