Fighting Resumes In Pro-Russian Stronghold Of Eastern Ukraine
SLAVIANSK, UKRAINE - JULY 27: A Ukrainian soldier points out a sign that reads "Battle for Donbas [eastern Ukraine] & Angry Russians" on ammunition boxes allegedly provided by Russia to rebels that remain on the grounds of an aeronautical college, as eastern Ukrainian residents cope with the aftermath of months of pro-Russian separatist control of their town of Slaviansk, Ukraine, on July 27, 2014. Though rebels of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic withdrew from Slaviansk on July 5, Ukrainian forces continue to push south for control of territory where Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot down, and to surround the rebel-stronghold city of Donetsk to the south, to oust separatists supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has vowed to protect the Russian speaking people of eastern Ukraine in their political stand-off with pro-West Ukrainians in the capital Kiev and the country's west.
