VJ Day Portraits 2015 - Burma Veterans And Civilian Internees

HUNTINGDON, UNITED KINGDOM - AUGUST 05: **HANDOUT IMAGE ONLY TO BE USED WITH VJ DAY PORTRAITS FEATURE** Troops and equipment land on the Normandy beaches in this photograph taken by WWII veteran Brian Carter from the bridge of the landing craft he captained during D-Day. Brian, now aged 90, served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. At just 18 years old he was one of the youngest naval officers to engage in prolonged action on the Normandy beaches during Operation Overlord. After D-Day Brian was sent to the Far East and was captain of a ship there. He remembers the celebrations that took place on board the boat on VJ Day as the sailors brought the rum out. As Brian was Captain and he didnt want anyone falling over the side of the boat drunk, he went round tying people to the boat that were in danger of falling overboard. Luckily, no one did! The Royal British Legion will join the nation in commemorating the 70th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day on Saturday 15 August and will be hosting veterans and their families at a reception after the national events in London. www.britishlegion.org.uk (Photo by Christopher/Getty Images)
