Durian Fruit Festival in East Java - Indonesia
JOMBANG, EAST JAVA, INDONESIA - 2014/03/08: Thousands of people scrambling to get at 'free' durians at the climax of the festival called "Kenduren Wonosalam" in the village of Wonosalam. What happens when a durian is flung into the air and dozens of people scramble to try and catch it? This frantic spectacle can be seen annually in a village called Wonosalam, during the Kenduren Wonosalam festival, which this year took place on March 8. Piles of the thorny fruit are driven around the village before they are thrown to the waiting crowds. The participants usually consist of groups of people who climb a structure made from the durian fruit. Their task is to collect as many fruits as possible and to throw them back to friends in the crowd below who then attempt to catch these hard, heavy and spiky fruits. Those who catch a durian are entitled to eat it on the spot, or take it home to share with the family. (Photo by Arief Priyono/LightRocket via Getty Images)
