BRAZIL-BELO MONTE-PROTEST
Protestors burn tires during a demonstration against Norte Energia - the company responsible for the construction of Belo Monte hydroelectric power plant - demanding compensation for the loss of income from the flooding of the Xingu river near Altamira, in the northern state of Para, Brazil, on March 18, 2014. The dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Brazil and provide 11% of the nation's electricity. Norte Energia says about 502km2 will be flooded and 117 social, economic and environmental projects are underway for the millions affected in the region.
