Mental Health in Colorado
DENVER, CO. - MAY 15: Lisa Abeyta looks for a spot to spend the night along the Lakewood Gulch in Denver, CO, May 15, 2014. Unable to secure a spot at the shelter she said, "I'm scared but Im not going to show it. I guess this is better than staying downtown or at a bus station." Lisa has tried to commit suicide twice, once after becoming homeless, and once after being raped. She said two men grabbed her, "and dragged me into the alley and they raped me. I tried to commit suicide, that was in 2006. I remember the alley no one heard my screaming." Lisa Abeyta had no backup plan when her landlord stopped paying the mortgage on the townhouse she was renting. She had three days to pack her things and leave. With no place to go, she became homeless. Diagnosed with depression and bipolar disorder, she struggled to find help. After more than a year of shuffling from shelters to camps and back to shelters, she found permanent housing through the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.
