SKOREA-FESTIVAL-CULTURE-SEA PARTING

In a photo taken on March 21, 2015 a woman checks the water level as she waits for the evening low tide that will expose a pathway between the South Korean islands of Jindo and Modo during the 'Jindo Sea Parting festival'. The annual phenomenon is understood to be a result of 'tidal harmonics' caused by the relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and the Sun which when 'in phase' create an extreme low tide revealing a causeway between 40 and 60 metres (131 - 196 ft.) wide for around one hour between the islands of Jindo and Modo, on the southern-most tip of the South Korean peninsula. The four-day festival, the dates of which change slightly each year, is a popular attraction for both tourists and locals; many of whom take the opportunity to dig for shell fish and collect seaweed.
