TURKEY-SYRIA-REFUGEE
Hansjorg Haber (L), head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Turkey, speaks to a Syrian refugee girl at a computer class on December 14, 2015, at the training centre funded by the EU in the Sanliurfa province near the Syrian border.
Turkey is home to at least 2.2 million Syrian refugees after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared an open door policy at the onset of the Syrian crisis. Out of the 2.2 million Syrians in Turkey, only around 260,000 stay in camps near the Syrian border and the remaining vast majority is scattered throughout the country including big cities like Istanbul. Education is one of the main challenges. In September, the Turkish government promised to double the number of Syrian refugees at school, from the current 230,000. / AFP / ADEM ALTAN / TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY FULYA OZERKAN (Photo credit should read ADEM ALTAN/AFP via Getty Images)
