Fast Reactor
10th May 1957: A giant steel sphere at an atomic power station at Dounreay in Caithness, Scotland, which houses a 'fast breeding reactor'. Dounreay is Britain's first fast reactor and has been built because Britain's fuel needs are rapidly expanding, while traditional natural resources are dwindling. One ton of uranium can produce the power of 10,000 tons of coal and Dounreay's advanced design is expected to produce the equivalent of one million tons of coal.
