Interior Minister De Maiziere Visits "Heroes" Project

"Heroes" trains young men, mostly of immigrant backgrounds and who come from families with very non-Western outlooks on the role of honor, marriage and women, to adopt a more liberal approach and attitude. The young men then go back into their communities and seek to influence others. Germany is home to many very conservative immigrant families, especially from eastern Turkey, where the behavior of a daughter is seen to have a great impact on the honor of the entire family. There are typically dozens of cases of "honor killings" every year across Germany in which family members murder a daughter whom they feel has abandoned her conservative principles, often by adopting Western dress and education or marrying outside the community.
