HUTU REFUGEE CRISIS, KISANGANI, CONGO, AFRICA - 1997: An aid worker from the Congolese Red Cross lifts a desperately emaciated child from a stretcher in a makeshift clinic in the outpost town of Biaro, Congo. An estimated 80,000 Rwandan Hutu tribe refugees fled Rwanda for fear of reprisals for the atrocities their tribe had inflicted upon the Tutsi tribe and surfaced in the Congo (formerly Zaire) left to fend for themselves in the most inhospitable jungle that lies directly on the equator. Fearing retribution for a genocidal campaign that had been waged by Hutu hard-liners against the Tutsi many of the survivors of the 1200 mile trek across Zaire, the former Belgium colony now called the Congo, had nothing to do with the genocide. Traversing some of the nastiest terrain on the planet - malaria infested swamps and stretches of jungle so thick it is impossible to see a person a few feet away - those who survived did so on roots and leaves.
