This is an aerial view of a northwestern Wisconsin frac sand mining operation. Hydraulic fracturing (frac) sand is mixed with a fluid and injected into rock to create cracks enabling the production of natural gas and oil from deep below the earth’s surface. The sand, which is very round and strong, remains in the fracture creating a porous channel for oil and gas to flow. Shot from the open window of a small plane.
